Connection, Dialogue, and Cooperation Take Center Stage at “Dinner for Ten” Hosted by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Suriname

Paramaribo, Suriname — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints hosted a special gathering under the theme “Dinner for Ten,” bringing together religious leaders, representatives of community organizations, and local government officials to express appreciation for their ongoing collaboration and to strengthen relationships that bless the communities of Suriname. 

During the event, the Church’s commitment to humanitarian service and community well-being was highlighted. Chris Nazir, president of the Paramaribo Suriname District, and Romana Ronoreso, first counselor in the district presidency, presented an overview of the humanitarian initiatives carried out during 2025 and 2026. Among these was the Church’s ongoing support for the pediatric ward of the National Hospital ('s Lands Hospitaal) through donations of diapers and infant formula. 

Those in attendance also learned about several community initiatives, including a wheelchair distribution initiative that has benefited individuals with mobility challenges, as well as support provided to the Wan Okasi Foundation through the donation of computers equipped with specialized software for individuals who are blind or visually impaired. In addition, in collaboration with The Salvation Army Suriname, The Church of Jesus Christ has supported a food assistance program that provides groceries to families in need and meals to individuals experiencing hardship. 

Other efforts included improvements to the sanitation facilities at schools in Koewarasan and Wulfingh, carried out in partnership with community organizations. Plans were also made for future donations of medical equipment to the Academic Hospital Paramaribo and Medical Mission, as well as initiatives focused on mental health and suicide prevention in collaboration with the Military Hospital and the Rotary Club. 

Among those in attendance were Adiel Kallan, president of Madjlies Moeslimien Suriname (MMS); Atmanand Ramcharan, president of the Council of Priests of the Arya Dewaker community; and Majors Earnest and Germaine Gachelin of The Salvation Army Suriname, together with other religious and community leaders. 

During the gathering, leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ emphasized the importance of unity and cooperation in addressing the needs of society. President Ronoreso stated, “We may not be able to help all of Suriname, but we can help a part of it.” President Nazir added, “We should not wait for the government. Let us improve the world by beginning with ourselves.” 

The event also highlighted the value of interfaith dialogue and the importance of creating opportunities for people of different faiths to work together for the benefit of their communities. The gathering concluded with a message of peace, respect, and unity shared by Atmanand Ramcharan. 

Organized by the Communications Committee of The Church of Jesus Christ in Suriname under the direction of Brother Imro Wehl, the event demonstrated how collaboration among religious, community, and civic organizations can strengthen society and create meaningful opportunities for service.
