Guyana Prime Minister Receives “The Saints”

The Prime Minister expressed pleasure to learn that the Church is active in encouraging its members and other citizens to live positive and dignified lives.

On Monday January 24, 2022, the Honorable Prime Minister of Guyana, Brigadier (ret’ d) Mark Philips met with two representatives of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at his office in Georgetown. They were the First Councilor in the Trinidad Mission Presidency Cardon McKenzie and Director of Communication Leslie Sobers who presented a gift, a book on the Church’s History entitled “The Saints” Vol. 2.

At the presentation, which was done by President McKenzie, the Prime Minister was given a synopsis of the history of the Church and was also briefed about the work being done in Guyana and around the world.

President McKenzie took the opportunity to indicate the capacity, willingness, and readiness of Latter-day Saints to assist in issues confronting Guyana such as improving the lives of citizens and encouraging self-reliance.

The Prime Minister expressed pleasure to learn that the Church is active in encouraging its members and other citizens to live positive and dignified lives.

One of the high points of the meeting was the indication by President McKenzie that the Church is active in advocating that its members follow the country’s guidelines and efforts   at combating the present pandemic.

The Prime Minister expressed appreciation at the fact that the Church has lent support to the fight against Covid-19 by its recent sizable donations of medical items and supplies to the Ministry of Health, in this regard.

The Prime Minister also indicated that he is responsible for the National Covid Task Force as part of his portfolio and that he would be pleased to have further discussions and engagements with the Church in battling the Covid pandemic and in persuading citizens to become vaccinated.

Both, the Prime Minister and President McKenzie concluded that the twenty-minute presentation and meeting was a welcome and positive step towards the Church’s continued involvement in Guyana’s development.

The Prime Minister expressed gratitude for being chosen as the recipient of “The Saints” and assured that he would read the book and regard it as a cherished addition to his library.
