Paramaribo, Suriname – July 26, 2025. In a landmark initiative to foster unity and mutual understanding among youth of diverse religious backgrounds, the Suriname Church Communication Committee successfully hosted its first-ever interfaith youth sports and recreation activity. Held under the theme “Unity and Togetherness, Despite Religious Diversity,” the event brought together approximately 400 young participants, ages 14 to 17, for a day of friendly competition, cultural exchange, and community building.

The event marked a significant milestone in interfaith collaboration in Suriname. Organized by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the activity was made possible through partnerships with several prominent religious organizations, including the Hindu organization Arya Dewaker, the Salvation Army, and various Christian school communities. Each group shared a common vision: to promote unity and togetherness across religious lines.

“This initiative was born out of a shared desire to build bridges among our youth,” said Brother Wehl Imro, Director of Church Communications in Suriname. “By engaging in sports and recreation, we created a space where young people could connect beyond doctrine and discover common values.”

The day’s activities included team sports, group challenges, and interactive sessions designed to encourage teamwork, respect, and dialogue. Youth from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints had the opportunity to network with peers from other faiths, forming bonds of friendship and mutual respect that organizers hope will endure beyond the event. The success of the initiative was such that participating organizations have already expressed strong interest in making it an annual tradition. “The enthusiasm and spirit of cooperation we witnessed today were truly inspiring,” said Sister Henna Daan, Communications Specialist for the Church. “It’s clear that our youth are eager for more opportunities like this.”

The event also garnered national attention. Brother Imro and Sister Daan were interviewed on Apintie, Suriname’s national television network, where they shared insights into the planning and purpose behind the event. Their message emphasized the importance of interfaith collaboration in strengthening communities and preparing the next generation for leadership in a diverse society.

As Suriname continues to embrace its multicultural and multi-religious identity, initiatives like this interfaith youth event serve as powerful reminders of the strength found in unity. With plans already underway for next year’s gathering, the Church and its partners are setting a precedent for inclusive, values-driven youth engagement in the Caribbean region.
