On March 16, 2024, Guadelope’s Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul Catholic Cathedral hosted a concert by the Group Karibbean Voices, from the local Adventist church and the Brigham Young University Student’s Choir, representing The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
“A Family United in Christ” was a collaboration of three religious’ groups from the French District of the Caribbean Area, coming together to celebrate their love for music. The concert drew 1,500 attendees to the cathedral and another 700 tuning in through You Tube. According to comments from the night’s attendees, the event, drawing the attention of government and religious leaders alike, was an outstanding success.
The program included a mix of both choral and solo pieces. Monique Ange Hertin, of the Adventist Choir and Doctors Andrew Crane and Brent Wells, from the BYU Choir, directed the groups in repertoires ranging from spirited rhythms to spiritual hymns of Christ. Both choirs joined together to a standing ovation for the final number, “Total Praise”, a spiritual yet lively finale to the evening, written by Director Hertin. A spirit of love, mutual respect, and friendship was developed through this relationship building event.
The following day a two-hour Master Class was held which gave 150 music enthusiasts an opportunity to receive training on vocal techniques and choir leadership. Leading the class were the members and directors of the BYU Choir.
More than just a musical event, the weekend served as a connection for the Guadeloupe community to forge new friendships with others who share their love of music and devotion to Christ.
